In 1979, Michael Nathan and Paul Bermanzohn attended a Worker's Party rally against the Ku Klux Klan. The Klan arrived and started a shooting spree that wounded Bermanzohn and killed several, including Nathan. This led to an examination of the community and their relationship with the Klan.
