  • S01E01 The Deck With Levels

    Brian and Tanya have a unique request: they want a two-tiered deck to enjoy their backyard, but they want it designed around their family’s winter hockey rink spot. Challenge accepted. Paul takes advantage of this tricky backyard and creates an upper deck with a screened in family room and a lower deck with a hot tub, bar and lounge, centered around the hockey rink space so parents can watch their kids play…except Paul isn’t a big fan of waiting for the winter. Apparently there is a way to have your deck and play hockey too.

    Lori and Ross had an upper level deck that fell down a couple of years ago. Now they pretty much avoid their backyard. This couple loves funky and wants a space that's peaceful and different. Pretty much the opposite of what they have now. Paul and the team decide to take all of the square angles out of the yard with circles and curves. And build a pergola. But there are pergolas and then there are intricate circular pergolas with cedar slats and steel wire suspension. The pergola is spectacular. Throw in a three-season room, curved staircase, fire pit lounge and bbq area. This is a backyard they'll never want to leave.

    Kevin and Pauline's large yard is a blank slate...and they want to use the entire slate. In this episode we see an incredible transformation. Paul and the crew battle rain, mud and a million details. Jeff takes every square inch of space without a deck and incorporates stone pavers and stone steps. The end result is a private oasis with a full outdoor kitchen, granite topped bars, a pool with waterfalls, pergolas and an enclosed cabana. Spectacular.

This episode proves that small is mighty. Paul and the team give this small yard the full treatment and create three distinct deck spaces with intricate angled pergolas, a canvas awning, metal privacy screens and a built-in bbq spot with counters...oh, and a path leading to a stone pad fire pit area with a gorgeous privacy screen. Who needs to sit in weekend traffic?

  • S02E12 The Spiral Staircase Deck

    Margaret and Dan have a large private backyard they love. The problem is they have no way to get to it from their current deck. The challenge: how do you get from a top deck to a bottom deck without having stairs taking up valuable space? Answer: a spiral staircase. Paul and the team come into this project inspired and build an incredible space that includes an upper deck with a metal spiral staircase leading to a lower deck with a hot tub area (with a motorized gazebo-like cover), bar and lounge, which then leads to a circular aerial structure with a circular stone pad beneath. Now that they can get to their yard, they'll never want to leave.

    Silvina and Andrew are a tonne of fun. This couple loves to be different and different is what they're going to get. When you ask Paul to build you a space that feels like you're in the Caribbean...he's going to take that to heart. In this episode Paul and the gang take a boring townhouse backyard and turn it into a resort. Docks inspire the deck spaces: there's a tiki bar, a lounge area with a thatched cabana roof, turned cedar piers and bamboo...everywhere. Paul took a big chance on this one. And the results are simply amazing.

They have two young boys but with a park nearby they want their deck to be all about entertaining. Did we mention there’s a remote control for the lights? This is one lounge Michael and Shelley will never want to leave.

    Diane and Russ aren’t your typical couple and they aren’t looking for your typical deck. Diane is an artist and musician and wants a deck that reflects her creative personality. The couple also wants a space that reflects their gorgeous backyard that actually has a stream running through it. And at one point the stream has Paul running towards it. Paul decides to build the deck in the shape of a guitar, with a hot tub area that has an interactive metal sculpture above that you can actually turn, and a fire feature.

In this episode Paul takes a pie shape yard and creates a triangle-shaped deck to compliment it. The deck has three areas that all encourage huge parties. There’s a built-in bbq area with an outdoor fridge, a large dining area and a gorgeous lounge with comfy furniture, beautiful steel cut privacy screens and lights to warm up cold nights. Homeowners John and Olga now have the backyard space they’ve always wanted.

  • S04E01 The Awning Deck

    After ten years of living with an empty backyard, Kenneth and Tutran realize it’s time to turn their backyard patch of grass into a family escape. With two young children, they want their deck to be multi-faceted – enough space for the adults to entertain, but also with a shaded place to relax as they watch the kids play. Paul comes up with a three-deck layout that includes a dining zone with a covered BBQ, a central lounge deck with curved cedar beams and a retractable awning, and a secondary lounge area to soak up the sun. Anita and Ken can finally escape the sweltering summer sun under the shade slats and retractable awning of their awesome new poolside retreat.

    A young urban couple with two young daughters, Ileana and Lawrence want both beauty and function in their backyard. Paul designs a modern deck with a perfect blend of the two. A massive BBQ nestled in a marble countertop sits on the upper level beside a dining zone, and curved stairs lead down to the yard and children’s play structure. The lower lounge zone is surfaced in an elegant stone, and is joined to the upper level by a see-through outdoor fireplace. Ileana and Lawrence can enjoy their new urban escape relaxing under towering stainless steel beams and hidden by cedar privacy screens.

    Darren and Delaine desperately want their backyard to accommodate their four children and large extended family, but realize their scattered collection of lawn furniture is not cutting it.     No one likes maintaining a deck, and Cheryl and Andrew are proof of that! They want to replace their rotting cedar deck with a low maintenance version that has all the fixings. Paul’s got the perfect solution, a deck that’s surfaced completely in stone! This one’s got a ton of add-ons - a massive hot tub, a covered BBQ that’s connected to the house by a heated walkway, a fire table, a water feature and finally backlit translucent stone privacy screens! Not only will Cheryl and Andrew have practically no maintenance to do, they can also spend all of their free time relaxing on their luxurious new deck.

    Selmin and Yasmin want to fill in their massive empty backyard with a deck big enough to accommodate their huge extended family. Their major request for Paul is to create enough privacy on a second story deck so the family can enjoy the outdoors without feeling like they’re on display. Paul dives into this one and builds an absolutely massive two-tiered deck. The first story level has three separate lounge zones that are completely sheltered from the rain and surrounded by retractable mesh screens to keep the bugs out. The second story level has decorative privacy screens and a curved translucent polycarbonate pergola that covers a dining zone and BBQ. This deck has a ton of style and privacy, and is truly one of a kind.

  • S04E09 The Beach Club Deck

    Cass lives at and runs a gorgeous beach club with an in-ground pool surrounded by 11 family cottages, and dreams of having a large outdoor communal space where everyone can congregate. Paul has the perfect solution – and it’s big! He encompasses the pool with two lounges covered by twin pergolas with retractable awnings, a separate dining and outdoor kitchen zone, and a large sun lounging deck. Abundant fire features enable the party to continue well into the evenings, as do two large backlit see-through stone onyx panels. Glass panel railings allow the community to socialize and take in the stunning view of the lake all at the same time.

    Susan and Bert bought the perfect new house to retire in, except their open backyard has a nice view and nothing else! Susan and Bert can now enjoy their retirement in luxury.
