Eesti popmuusika paremiku tunnustamise vajadust tundsid eesti fonogrammitootjad esmakordselt oma esindusorganisatsiooni Eesti Fonogrammitootjate Ühingu loomise aastal 1998, mil edukamatele artistidele anti kätte Eesti Popmuusika Aastaauhinnad Kuldne Plaat 1998. Auhinnatseremoonia toimus ja salvestati Eesti Televisiooni stuudios 29. detsembril 1998 jõudes 40 minutilise telesaatena eetrisse kaks päeva hiljem, aasta viimasel päeval.
