Erik Pinksterblom, 9 jaar oud, wordt tijdens studie voor toets in schilderij gevangen en belandt in een miniatuurwereld vol insecten met menselijke trekjes. Hij helpt een vlinder met liefdesgedicht, ontdekt over instinct versus wetenschap en meent waardevolle lessen te leren van wespen, spin en mieren. Hoewel niemand zijn avonturen gelooft, besefte hij de gemeenschappelijkheden tussen mensen en insecten.
