取自古文「編鐘為中華古代教化之禮器，古人作樂，鐘居其首，編鐘率為十六，與石磬相依，以諧其韻，應禮而成教化，以之鼓勵，亦金鐘王振，教俗化民之意耳。」意即希望通過金聲玉振，來教化大眾，開拓視野、提振心靈，也隱喻廣播電視事業對於國家社會之深遠影響，以及從業人員所肩負的重責大任。 金鐘獎在台灣傳播媒體界是一年一度的盛事，創始於1965年。設獎之初是以廣播為主，1965年金鐘獎設頒獎新聞節目、音樂節目、廣告節目等獎項、1966年增設個人技術獎。1970年將電視納入獎勵範圍，自此金鐘獎正式以廣播及電視為獎勵對象。
