Pendant l'Occupation, abandonné par sa mère dès sa naissance, Paul, 7 ans, a été recueilli par Mme Bainot, une brave lavandière du marais poitevin, qui l'aime autant que Jean, son propre fils. Mais, accablée par les dettes, elle ne peut garder Paul qui doit retourner à l'assistance. Là il se lie d'amitié avec Florentin, le jardinier. Il est ensuite confié à un couple de "gens biens", les Maillard qui ont déjà adopté un autre enfant pour qui ils ont une admiration excessive. Bien vite Mme Maillard prends Paul en grippe. Ce dernier qui est très malheureux tente, avec l'aide de son nouvel ami Bruno, de retrouver Mme Bainot...
