At the end of the Cold War, a Korean Air Lines Jumbo Jet, Flight 007, left Anchorage Alaska bound for the South Korean capital of Seoul. Instead of an uneventful journey, the Jumbo Jet strayed northwards over a Russian missile firing range where a top secret missile was due to be tested. Belatedly, the Russian air force scrambled to intercept what they thought was a US spy plane invading their airspace. Without warning, the Korean airliner was shot down with tragic loss of life.
