On New Year's Eve, high school juniors Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) meet at a party while both teens are at a ski lodge during winter break. At the party, the two are called upon to sing karaoke together ("Start of Something New"). They find that they have a connection and decide to exchange numbers before going their separate ways.
As seniors in high school, Troy and Gabriella struggle with the idea of being separated from one another as college approaches. Along with the rest of the Wildcats, they stage a spring musical to address their experiences, hopes and fears about their future.

When a blizzard barrels down on Salt Lake City, the Wildcats are stranded at East High after hours, just as E.J. receives some bad news. As cabin fever sets in, Miss Jenn inspires Nini to make a bold choice about her future; Kourtney’s coworker Howie makes a surprising move; and Gina and Carlos come to blows.
When Gina finds herself stranded at the airport over Spring Break, a surprise run-in changes her mind about what she wants. Meanwhile, the separated Wildcats find a way to bond over song during their break, as Ricky finally sees his mom again after their opening night run-in at "High School Musical."
While the Wildcats head to Salt Lake Slices to digest the excitement of opening night - and a pizza or two - Miss Jenn continues to experience tunnel vision over the Menkie Awards. Mr. Mazzara shows his softer side; Ricky reevaluates a party crasher; Gina speaks her truth; and Nini makes a life-altering call.
After a momentous year at East High, the Wildcats head to Camp Shallow Lake for two weeks of fun in the sun. With a high-stakes production of "Frozen" looming and new campers threatening to shake up the Wildcats' dynamic, the campers are in for an unforgettable summer of highs, lows, and "Let It Go's."
After the cast list is revealed, the campers pack up and embark on Maddox's favorite camp tradition: Newbie Initiation Night! Ghost stories and s'mores abound, but the true centerpiece of the night is "The Legend of the Woman in the Woods," a spooky tale that sends Gina and Ricky on an adventurous quest... into the unknown.
After promising juicy drama for the "Frozen" documentary, E.J., Carlos and Val come with a Real Housewives-inspired plan: to turn rehearsals into "The Real Campers of Shallow Lake," complete with fabricated storylines and staged vignettes. But when the fake drama pushes some very real buttons, E.J. realizes that he may have gone too far.
After an explosive rehearsal, the Wildcats are launched into battle: Color War, an annual all-camp competition where rivalries are not only formed but encouraged. The stakes are higher than the rock-climbing wall... but with so many games to be played, will the Wildcats ever feel like "one team" again?
