A miserable relationship develops between two European middle aged migrants who have a mutual love of music. Both are impoverished, and behind her refusal to marry him is a tragic secret - she has an incurable illness. Their relationship grows more and more hopeless and they decide to kill themselves - the man then shoots her and tries to poison himself, but fails. Rather than tell police about their pact, the man makes up a story about a crime of passion.
