In 1972, Rob Bredl and his father, Joe, joined Dr. Robert Bustard’s Applied Ecology Unit to establish a crocodile farm at Edward River, now Pormpuraaw. With crocodiles nearing extinction after years of hunting, Rob took on the challenge of finding the few remaining animals and their nests, and capturing crocodiles for the farm. These early adventures helped shape the bushman he would become. The Bredls later established a zoo at Airlie Beach, where Rob’s remarkable crocodile-handling skills attracted public and media attention. A documentary, Kissing Crocodiles, helped introduce him to audiences as the Barefoot Bushman. This film documents the beginning of that journey.
