Der junge Joseph Long wird mit einer Kette an den Füßen auf dem Grund des Hudson River gefunden. Alles sieht nach einem Mafia-Mord aus, doch der Tote war der Sohn eines Polizisten und hatte eine absolut reine Weste. Ist er aufgrund einer Verwechslung umgebracht worden?
Barek und Logan entdecken, dass es mehrere Männer namens Joseph Long in der Stadt gibt, und dass einer von ihnen sogar am selben Tag wie das Opfer geboren wurde. Bei ihm handelt es sich um einen bekannten Bombenbastler. Als klar wird, dass Mafiaboss Pete Taglioti beinahe Opfer eines Bombenanschlags geworden wäre, spricht alles dafür, dass Taglioti sich an dem Attentäter rächen wollte, aber den falschen Mann erwischt hat.
Zudem findet Logan heraus, dass jemand bei der Polizei mit der Mafia kooperiert. Doch wer ist dieser Jemand? Zwei weitere Leichen, ein Buchmacher und eine junge Frau sowie ein erschossenes Mafia-Mitglied geben den Ermittlern zusätzlich Rätsel auf. Zumindest gelingt es Logan und Barek, die undichte Stelle bei der Polizei ausfindig zu machen: es sind die Detectives Mark Virgini und Al Kerkhoff. Doch Logan und Barek können ihnen nichts nachweisen...
