Gaspard or The Little Drum of the Snow

In Eastern Europe, around 1750, the adventures of a small drum of the armies of the archduke, aged fourteen, during one of the wars which opposed in this region Greeks, Prussians and Turks. Separated from his companions, he walks through Europe hidden in a barrel. - Gaspard escapes the enemies who pursue him by taking refuge in an abandoned barn where he meets a six-year-old girl whom he calls Carrot. She has lived there, solitary, for an indefinite time, feeding on seeds and pigeon eggs. The two children sympathize. Carrot helps Gaspard hide in a barrel. Shortly after, the soldiers enter the barn, and seeing that barrel so heavy and so closed, they carry it with them, convinced that it contains a treasure. Thus begins the adventures of Gaspard.

En Europe orientale, vers 1750, les aventures d'un petit tambour des armées de l'archiduc, âgé de quatorze ans, pendant une des guerres qui opposèrent dans cette région Grecs, Prussiens et Turcs. Séparé de ses compagnons, il se promène à travers l'Europe caché dans un tonneau. - Gaspard échappe aux ennemis qui le poursuivent en se réfugiant dans une grange abandonnée où il rencontre une petite fille de six ans qu'il surnomme Carotte. Elle vit là, solitaire, depuis un temps indéterminé, en se nourrissant de graines et d'oeufs de pigeon. Les deux enfants sympathisent. Carotte aide Gaspard à se cacher dans un tonneau. Peu de temps après, les soldats pénètrent dans la grange, et voyant ce tonneau si lourd et si bien fermé, ils l'emportent avec eux, persuadés qu'il renferme un trésor. Ainsi commencent les aventures de Gaspard.
