Paris, 1889. Dans l’espoir d’offrir un avenir meilleur à son bébé, Rose quitte le Morvan pour devenir nourrice au service d’une famille bourgeoise. Elle rencontre Odette, une sage-femme, qui la prévient : une nourrice ne peut garder sa fille avec elle. Une solution risquée s’offre à Rose. Echanger en secret sa fille avec celle d’Hélène de Gersande, une mère frappée par la perte soudaine de son nourrisson.
