The Mavericks Invitational is considered the world's wildest big wave surf contest. The wave itself, located in Half Moon Bay, California, is steeped in a complex history. Running the gamut from triumphs to tragedy, names like Jeff Clark, Flea, Peter Mel, Jay Moriarty, Sion Milosky and Mark Foo have become synonymous with Mavericks for good or ill. The 24 invitees will be given 24 hours notice before the contest runs, mobilizing competitors and thrusting Mavs onto center stage of the big wave world — just where it loves to be.
