2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

This is the last American big block V8, and somehow one of the most disappointing trucks I’ve ever driven. The 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD 4x4, powered by GM’s Vortec 8100, was supposed to be the modern heir to the 454, and bring big blocks into the modern era with tons of power, torque, and unfiltered American ego. Instead, it’s a noisy, unstable, needy parasite of a truck that drains time, money, and sanity in equal measure. Chance, our volunteer, picked this thing up for just $800, but still had to perform surgery-level maintenance thanks to GM’s infamous camshaft and crankshaft sensor failures, timing component nightmares, and brake design that laughs at the concept of convenience. It’s a truck that’s durable enough to tow 15,000 pounds, but not interesting enough to offer more than just competency. This is the ultimate American work truck for people whose therapy is more work, and who’ll tolerate a rough ride as long as they can hear the big block’s last heartbeat.
