ROAD TO NATIONHOOD: THE UNDECLARED WAR is a 1-part documentary film highlighting the challenges that the Prime Minister of Malaya, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra faced with forming the biggest Federation in South East Asia - The Federation of Malaysia. The president of Indonesia, Sukarno saw the Malaysia idea as a new threat to the region and a form of neo-colonialism by the British. Undeterred by the challenge, Tunku pursued discussion with Singapore, Brunei, North Borneo and Sarawak to form Malaysia. Unhappy, Indonesia pressured international communities to object Tunku’s actions. However, the British pushed Tunku to materialize the plan and created the federation by 1963. It did not come easy for Tunku when Sukarno decided to cut ties with Malaysia and declared a military confrontation that saw more than 700 lives were lost from both sides. The confrontation ended in 1966 when failed military coup in Indonesia prompted Sukarno to step down and his successor Suharto declared an end to the conflict. This was followed by the formation of the Association of South East Asian Nations or ASEAN in August 1967. The documentary’s main focus is to account the stories of Tunku’s political approach with Indonesia and his internal struggle within Malaysia in the background of the volatile Cold War between the east and the west. The story will be told through politicians, former diplomats, historians and military experts.
