Lützerath is to be cleared so that the energy company RWE can mine the lignite beneath and behind Lützerath. The planned eviction is the result of a deal that the federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia concluded with RWE - a compromise that brought forward the phase-out of brown coal by eight years.
