It is six months since Greg, Agnes and Jack left Whitecross. Seth finds Jack wandering in a fever in some woods and takes him back to his home to look after him. There finds that Jack has letters for Charles and Jenny which are from Greg. Charles, Pet, Jenny, Hubert and the children have moved from Whitecross to Challoner. When they learn the news about the letters, Jenny and Charles go to Seth's home. Jack is delirious and says some unintelligible things about a place called Wellingham, where he and Greg had been. A distraught Jenny is desperate to see Greg again, so she and Charles head off to Wellingham. Pet also sends Hubert on after them. After rescuing a man staked out in the woods and meeting the authoritarian Clifford and the sinister Miedel, Jenny and Charles become worried about the situation in which they have become embroiled...
Sono già passati sei mesi da quando Greg se n'è andato da Whitecross con Agnes e Jack sulla mongolfiera. Jack si trova in un bosco, ferito e braccato da cani feroci. Per sfuggire alla furia degli animali, trova rifugio su un albero e viene salvato dal fabbro Seth che lo accompagna a casa sua. Qui Jack scopre che Charles si è trasferito a Challoner con un gruppo di sopravvissuti, poi cade nell'incoscienza, preda di una febbre molto violenta. Trovando fra le cose di Jack alcune lettere indirizzate a Charles e a Jenny, Seth decide di usare un nuovo sistema telefonico per contattare Challoner. Quando Charles viene a sapere delle lettere, intuisce che provengono da Greg e assicura Seth che arriverà da lui il giorno dopo. Jenny è ansiosa di ricevere notizie di Greg e insiste per accompagnare Charles. Dalle lettere si scopre che Greg e Agnes, arrivati in Norvegia hanno trovato una situazione disperata e hanno ripreso la via del ritorno. Lasciato Jack a casa del fabbro, Charles e Jenny partono alla ricerca dei due compagni, ma lungo la strada vengono fatti prigionieri e portati alla comunità del Colonnello Clifford. Qui scoprono che Greg e Agnes sono passati di lì appena una settimana prima.
