Cesare Borgia controls the votes of the 11 Spanish cardinals; he bargains with papal candidate Giuliano della Rovere, asking for appointment as commander of the papal armies and assistance with defense of "his" cities (located in the papal states). After his election, Pope Julius II conditions the fulfillment of his promises on Cesare's submission to Holy Mother Church--which is not forthcoming. Cesare's attempts to gain support fail due to the schemes of Sancia, whom he had imprisoned and whose brother he killed. Exile to Spain and confinement in the Castle of La Mota in follows. In 1504, he escapes and joins the King of Navarre and is subsequently killed in battle.
