Finally enlisted as a Marine, Sledge trains for combat at Camp Elliott. The 1st Marine Division lands at Cape Gloucester on the Japanese-held island of New Britain. As Leckie and the other Marines battle the Japanese, they quickly realize that the more ominous enemy is the smothering jungle itself. Having survived Gloucester and stationed on the godforsaken island of Pavuvu, Leckie begins displaying the physical and mental effects of combat and is sent to a naval hospital on nearby Banika for psychiatric observation.

Il est envoyé en observation psychiatrique dans un hôpital naval proche de Banika...

Il primo battaglione parte per combattere il nemico sull'isola di Cape Goucester, ma nonostante il coraggio dimostrato contro i giapponesi, la giungla sembra essere il vero nemico. Dopo essere sopravvissuto alla battaglia, Leckie comincia a mostrare segni di stanchezza mentale e viene mandato all'ospedale psichiatrico della marina.

Sledge schrijft zich in bij de mariniers en begint aan de basistraining. Het 1ste Regiment wordt terug ingezet op de Bismarck-archipel in de strijd bij Cape Gloucester. Daarna worden ze ingezet op Pavuvu, wat tijdelijk dienstdoet als thuis van de 1ste Marinedivisie. Leckie wordt behandeld voor nachtelijk bedplassen die veroorzaakt worden door de stress van de gevoerde strijd.

Sledge har omsider sluttet seg til marinen og trener ved Camp Elliot. Leckie og den første marinetroppen drar til Cape Gloucester på øya New Britain som er i Japans hender.

Sledge har till slut anslutit sig till marinkåren och genomgår träning vid Camp Elliot. Leckie och första marindivisionen tar sig till Cape Gloucester på ön New Britain som är i japanernas händer. Där inser de snart att deras värsta fiende inte är japanerna utan den snåriga djungeln.
