People, my today's episode is about how people lived and died in Russia’s infamous prison, the Kresty. You’ll find out who was sent to the psych ward; how inmates were tortured; who remained inside even after the prison was moved elsewhere. Today we’re going to tell you what it was really like being in St. Petersburg ill-famed ‘Crosses’ prison. If you look at the ‘Crosses’ from above, it becomes clear where the name comes from. The prison consisted of two cross-shaped buildings with towers in the center. Why so? The towers were meant for the guards who could see all four wings right through. The harsh survival conditions generated a set of very strict rules. Anyone who broke them might not have even survived till their trial. And all this was happening in the center of St. Petersburg.
