People, after the recent developments in Venezuela, hardly anyone is writing off Trump’s statements about Greenland as just another of his oddball rants. Right now, there are roughly 200 U.S. troops in the island's capital, Nuuk; and that’s a staggering presence for a territory of only 57,000 people. Diplomacy hasn’t been able to bear any fruit, and Trump is increasingly floating the idea of taking control "by any means necessary." Officially, it's referred to as military exercises. But when troops from France, Germany, the UK, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands start showing up after the Americans, it’s clear that this is more than a routine drill. The push to make Greenland American is nothing new. Washington first tried to buy the island from Denmark back in 1867. That deal fell through, as did another attempt in 1946.
