The young Philip Marlow returns to the country railway station following his mother's death in London. Forty years on, Marlow the hospital patient still dreams about the homecoming and the frightening figure of the scarecrow that now erupts into the ward.
Marlow is bijna genezen. Hij ziet zich als tienjarige, na de dood van zijn moeder, terug keren naar zijn vader. Finney slaagt erin het script te verkopen, maar de producenten willen Nicola niet in de hoofdrol. Zij wordt nijdig. De twee mysterieuze kerels worden wel heel opdringerig en verschijnen zelfs in het hospitaal. In het laatste deel van deze sublieme reeks laat auteur Dennis Potter alle knoppen doorslaan, met als resultaat een onvergetelijke shoot-out tussen de twee figuren (die zich ondertussen ontpopt hebben als een soort Laurel en Hardy) en de `zingende detective` in de hospitaalzaal waar Marlow ligt.
