Steve is adamantly opposed, but Jaime's bionic hearing is the only way to successfully open it the vault. Jaime's body seems to be rejecting her bionics, but does not tell anyone. After the mission the rejection worsens and leads her to run aimlessly. Steve tracts her down and brings her to Rudy, but there is nothing he can do and Jaime dies.

Oscar sends Steve and Jaime on a mission hoping to give Jaime some relief. The mission fails because of Jaime's condition and they return to Washington. Steve ultimately concludes that it is he who is causing Jaime's headaches and suggests Jaime be moved away from him to Rudy's Colorado Springs facility so she can fully recover.

He rigs the liberty bell, which is on tour around the country due to the bicentennial celebration, to explode unless he gets $5 million dollars and safe passage out of the country.
