Meanwhile, the President must make a decision before it's too late on whether to deploy a secret rescue mission to the space station, and the FBI is asked to determine who leaked the existence of the military shuttle to the press.

A la convention nationale du parti démocratique, la course à la nomination présidentielle a été ramenée à trois candidats : Russell, Hoynes et Santos. De son côté, Bartlet est face à un dilemme : soit il met en jeu la sécurité nationale, et lance la navette secrète de défense pour sauver les astronautes piégés dans la station orbitale, soit il fait le choix de les laisser mourir...
Alla Convention nazionale democratica, Russell, Santos e Hoynes si contendono i 2162 voti dei delegati che conferiranno a uno solo di loro la nomination a candidato presidenziale del partito, colui che dovrà vedersela con Vinick alle elezioni del prossimo novembre. Hoynes può disporre di un numero limitato di delegati, ma all'ultimo momento nella gara si inserisce il deputato Baker. La rivelazione sulla malattia della moglie di quest'ultimo lo mette ben presto fuori gioco. Santos fa un discorso molto ispirato che riesce a fargli ottenere la sospirata nomination. Nel frattempo, il Presidente Bartlet incarica il suo staff di individuare il responsabile della fuga di notizie inerente l'esistenza di uno Shuttle militare, mentre per gli astronauti della stazione spaziale il tempo scorre inesorabile.
