James hat neue Waggons bekommen, mit denen er nun ordentlich angibt. Klar, dass sich Thomas mächtig freut, als er erfährt, dass er auch neue Wagen bekommen wird. Doch die neuen Waggons sind frech und machen ständig Unsinn. In der Bekohlungsanlage toben sie nur herum und sind schließlich vollkommen verdreckt. Das gefällt Thomas überhaupt nicht. Er möchte saubere Waggons, die so schön aussehen, wie die von James. Als Thomas Kohle zum Hafen fahren soll, nimmt er seine alten Waggons, damit die neuen nicht schon wieder schmutzig werden. Doch bei altersschwachen Waggons kann auch mal was kaputt gehen...

Tomek i Kuba dostają nowe wagony towarowe. Zaczynają rywalizować o to, który z nich będzie miał czystsze wagony. Początkowo wygrywa Kuba. Tomek postanawia użyć swoich starych wagonów, aby nowe pozostały czyste. Stare wagony są zbyt stare aby wozić węgiel, w wyniku czego dochodzi do wypadku. Tomek stwierdza, że lepiej być użytecznym.
