In March 1986, a junior high school student was killed in Fukui City. Though the suspect who was arrested a year later pled not guilty, he ended up serving a prison sentence. He was finally acquitted at a retrial, but that was this July - nearly four decades later. Why did it take so long? One of the answers lies in the Japanese judicial system's absence of rules that require prosecutors to disclose evidence in a retrial. In the Fukui case, for many years the prosecution had been withholding key evidence that later proved the man's innocence.
