These included theories that she had been killed by a jealous ex-boyfriend and theories of mistaken identity and as well as the idea that somebody had hired an assassin to murder the woman who had become a public figure in revenge for a ‘Crimewatch’ conviction. Following a trial at the Old Bailey, 40-year-old Barry George, a local man with a history of sexual offences and stalking of women was found guilty of the murder of Jill Dando and sentenced to life. Although the police gathered enough information to send Stagg to trial in 1994, a judge at the Old Bailey threw the evidence out, believing it to have been gathered by “deceptive conduct of the grossest kind”. By 2007, Stagg had received over £700,000 in compensation. After new DNA evidence came to light, a prisoner named Robert Napper, who was already serving a sentence for another killing, was found guilty of Nickellʼs murder. Colin Stagg received a full apology from the police.

As fears grew for Sarah’s safety, Sussex Police started to investigate any known paedophiles living in the West Sussex area. Amongst other suspects, 41-year-old Roy Whiting was questioned after a previous sexual attack on an eight-year-old girl in a nearby village. On the 17 July, a body was found in a field near Pulborough, 15 miles from where Sarah disappeared. The body was confirmed as Sarah’s the following day, and soon after Roy Whiting was charged with her abduction and murder. DNA tests matched a strand of Sarah’s hair to a male’s T-shirt found in the back of Whiting’s car. Soon afterwards, her shoe was found in a country lane by a member of the public, and tests matched fibres on the shoe to the carpet of Whiting’s van. Whiting was sentenced to life imprisonment in December 2001. In this heartbreaking film, Sara Payne, Sarah’s mum, relives the day her daughter went missing, and recounts the horror and agonising days that unfolded in its wake. This programme analyses one of the most celebrated escape attempts, that of Clarence and John Anglin and Frank Morris, which was immortalised in Clint Eastwood's 1977 movie. The forbidding rocks of Alcatraz rise steeply from the sea, lashed by the treacherous waters of the San Francisco Bay. They posed a challenge to the many would-be escapees once penned up in this former penitentiary island. Alcatraz was a military prison before it became a federal penitentiary in 1934. The most successful escape during its military phase was in 1918, when four military prisoners escaped by raft. They eventually turned up in Sutro Forest - one was recaptured. Whether Morris and the Anglin brothers successfully escaped in 1962 remains a mystery. It was certainly possible to swim the waters of the San Francisco bay - three girls had proved it in 1933 - but, did they survive? Escape: Breakout From Alcatraz draws on contemporary accounts, as well as interviews with FBI agents, former prisoners and wardens at 'the Rock' to piece together the story of the escape. How did the escapees hide their preparations from wardens for over a year? And, if they did survive, how have they avoided detection by the authorities for 40 years?

  • S01E45 Truth and Lies: The Family Manson

Chris Connelly narrates and somewhat hosts this episode of 20/20 that takes a look at the Charles Manson cult and the destruction that they did back in 1969. The Manson case has been told countless times over the decades and there's really nothing new or original here. If you're already familiar with the man, the case and the trial then you're not going to learn anything new here but overall this is certainly a well-made documentary and one that is quite entertaining. The entire Manson saga was just so bizarre that you can hear it countless times and still wonder how it all happened. How people were talked into brutally murdering others. How Manson could hold such control over people. How someone could beg for the life of their unborn child and still be brutally murdered. We get interviews with some of the victim's family members as well as a couple of the Manson girls. Those interviewed are certainly very good at telling this story. If you're unfamiliar with the events that happened then there's a lot to take away from this documentary.

According to group member Susan Atkins, the Family believed that Manson was a manifestation of Jesus and that his prophecies were reliable concerning an imminent, apocalyptic race war.[5][6] They gained international attention after the murder of actress Sharon Tate and four others on August 9, 1969. The murders were committed by Tex Watson, Susan Atkins, and Patricia Krenwinkel. Linda Kasabian was also present but did not take part.
