Sieben Jahre nach dem Kindermord in Bethlehem will der Soldat Sefir (Pierre Clémenti) endlich das Kind Jesus (Matteo Bellina, als Erwachsener: Allessandro Gassmann) töten. Josef (Bekim Fehmiu) und Maria (Carmen Sanmartin) flüchten nach Ägypten. Dort wird Josef bei einem Brandanschlag schwer verletzt, Maria und Jesus schließen sich einer Karawane an und werden Sefir ausgeliefert, der jedoch in dem Kind den Messias erkennt.
Após algum tempo vivendo em Nazaré, José retorna com o menino Jesus a Jerusalém, já que o pobre vilarejo não pode dar a educação para o pequeno Cristo precisa para realizar sua missão entre os homens, porém, a vida na cidade grande, longe de sua amada mãe, acaba causando tristeza a Jesus. E durante sua estada em Jerusalém, o menino acaba tendo uma visão sobre o seu destino, sobre a paixão que lhe afligiria anos mais tarde.
When Jesus returns to his native village after a seven year absence, the young boy, Mary and Joseph have to start all over again. But with the help of their relatives and friends, the little family soon resumes a normal life. Then one day Roman soldiers arrive and take all the men away as prisoners for forced labor. Jesus has to grow up without his father near him and only a deeply grieving mother.
