Die britische Komikerin Victoria Wood hat sich auf eine Erkundungsreise durch das ehemalige Weltreich der berühmten Queen Victoria begeben. Ihre erste Station ist die indische Metropole Kalkutta. In einem Taxi durchquert Victoria die Stadt und bewundert gut erhaltene viktorianische Gebäude. Von dem in Indien lebenden Toby Sinclair erfährt sie, auf welch interessante Weise die Briten die verschiedenen einheimischen Sprachen erlernten und wie sich Indien zu einer wirtschaftlichen Supermacht entwickeln wird. Weiter geht ihre Reise nach Darjeeling. Dort hielten sich einst die britischen Frauen auf, um der Sommerhitze der Großstadt Kalkutta zu entfliehen. Anschließend besucht Victoria die ehemalige britische Kronkolonie Hongkong, die erst 1997 an China übergeben wurde. Hier erzählt ihr ein Tierarzt von den gegensätzlichen Einstellungen der Chinesen und der Briten zu Haustieren. Später beschäftigt sich eine Wahrsagerin mit Victorias Liebesleben. Auf der indonesischen Insel Borneo lernt Victoria den Nachkommen eines Häuptlings von Kopfjägern kennen. Und sie scheut sich nicht, eine regionale Delikatesse aus erhärtetem Vogelspeichel zu probieren. Außerdem wird sie Zeugin der ersten Kletterversuche eines Orang-Utan-Babys.
Victoria Wood visits countries that used to be part of Queen Victoria's British Empire. In Calcutta she takes a taxi through the city to see the extent of the British residue and discovers very well preserved Victorian buildings amongst the colours and textures of this marvellous city. She chats with Indian resident Toby Sinclair and discovers the intriguing way we learned local languages, and the legacy that will allow India to become an economic super power.
Then it’s up to Darjeeling, where British women would avoid the intensity of the Calcutta summers, and where taking tea wasn’t the only diversion in the long, often lonely, summer nights.
In Hong Kong, Victoria visits a vet to discuss the Chinese and British polar attitudes towards pets and gets her love life analysed by a fortune teller, before in Borneo, Victoria comes face to face with the descendent of a chief head hunter, a local solidified bird spit delicacy and a baby Orangutan’s first attempts at climbing.
