An armada of horned humanoid aliens known as Boazanians invade earth and launch their "beast fighters" all over the world, defeating most of the world's armed forces. The Boazanians first defeat from the hands of Super Electromagnetic Machine Voltes V brings the invaders to focus their attacks on Japan. Voltes V was designed by Professor Kentaro Gō (Doctor Ned Armstrong), his wife Professor Mitsuyo Gō (Doctor Mary Ann Armstrong) and their trusted colleague, Professor Hamaguchi (Doctor Richard Smith) and built by large scale construction effort backed by United Nations Earth Defense Force and General Oka (Commander Robinson). Voltes V is a robot composed of five "Volt Machines", and each are themselves formidable weapons. Each machine is piloted by Ken'ichi (Steve), Daijiro (Big Bert), and Hiyoshi (Little Jon): the three sons of Kentaro and Mitsuyo Gō, along with the only daughter of General Oka; Megumi (Jamie Robinson), and Ippei Mine (Mark Gordon), an orphan cowboy.

Sul pianeta Boazan si sta decidendo il successore dell'imperatore: l'erede è troppo debole, restano perciò il fratello minore, Kentarus, e il figlio della cortigiana preferita dell'imperatore, Zambazir. Zambazir scopre che il dott. Kentarus, sebbene figlio dell'imperatore, ha in realtà corna artificiali e dunque lo fa imprigionare. L'imperatore Zambazir, dopo la nomina, inizia una politica di invasione di altri pianeti, Terra inclusa. Kentarus invece, che ha sempre avuto dubbi sulle leggi discriminatorie del suo pianeta, si ritrova anch'egli fra gli schiavi: sfruttando le sue conoscenze scientifiche, crea armi di fortuna e organizza una rivolta, ma le forze dell'esercito sono superiori e la sommossa viene soffocata. Nel frattempo scopre che sua moglie è morta, dando alla luce un figlio. Il professore, con la speranza di poter organizzare una nuova rivolta contro l'imperatore Zambazir, fugge da Boazan. Raggiunta la Terra, si innamora della dottoressa Annabelle, dalla quale ha altri tre figli: Michel, Ivan e Carl.

우주 제패를 노리는 보아잔 성인의 침략은 지구에까지 영향을 미쳤다. 여기에 대항하기 위해 보아잔 별의 망명자 라 고르는 고우 켄타로라고 이름을 바꾸어 아내 미츠요와 스승 하마구치 박사의 협력을 얻어 슈퍼로봇 볼테스 V를 완성시킨다. 결국 보아잔 별의 침공이 시작되면서 켄타로는 행방불명이되고, 미츠요 역시 아들들의 지키기 위해 목숨을 버리고 만다. 그리고, 그 아들들인 고우 형제는 동료들과 함께 볼테스 V에 탑승하여 보아잔 별의 침략군과 싸움을 시작하는데, 보아잔 별의 젊은 사령관 프린스 하이넬과 고우 형제간에는 기묘한 인연이 자리잡고 있다.
'콤바트라 V'의 뒤를 잇는 초기 도에이의 거대 슈퍼로봇 애니메이션. 주인공 캐릭터들의 설정도 '콤바트라 V'와 흡사하다. 그러나 '콤바트라 V'가 열혈성의 로봇 메카닉물에 중점을 둔데 비해, '볼테스 V'는 부패한 귀족세력과 억압받는 시민들의 갈등 관계를 비롯하여, 볼테스의 파일럿들과 보아잔군의 사령관 하이넬의 관계 등 각 캐릭터들의 미묘한 갈등관계를 부각시켰다.
주인공 못지않은 미형의 악역 캐릭터 하이넬은 '콤바트라 V'의 가루다에서 이어져, 후속작 투장 다이모스의 리히텔까지 영향을 미쳤다. 사실 하이넬은 주인공 고우 형제의 아버지인 고우 켄타로 박사가 보아잔성에서 라 고르라는 이름으로 살고 있을때 보안잔 여인에게서 얻은 아들이다. 결국 하이넬은 고우 형제와 이복형제라는 설정이어서 이들간의 갈등에 대한 비극성을 강조하고 있다. 우리나라에선 볼트 파이브 등의 이름으로 알려져 있다.

Choudenji Machine Voltes V (Super Máquinas Eletromagnéticas Voltes V) é um anime inspirado nas séries Super Sentai que foi lançado no dia 13 de Abril de 1977 pela TV Asahi. Foi criado por Saburo Yatsude e dirigido por Tadao Nagahama, e é a segunda parte da Trilogia Robô que inclui Combattler V e Daimos. Voltes V passou pelas telas brasileiras no final dos anos 80 pela extinta Rede Manchete.
