From $30 FPV kamikaze drones frying $50 million airframes to South Korea canceling a $2.2 billion Apache order, the writing is on the rotor blades. (Although Australia just took delivery of a big batch of Apaches!) The war in Ukraine has shown that drones are cheap, plentiful, and deadly, while helicopters are expensive, slow, and vulnerable. I’ve always loved helicopters. I even took the Army’s SIFT test back in the day before choosing the Air Force and falling for the AWACS. But here’s the hard truth: on today’s battlefield, the once-mighty attack helicopter might be turning into an overpriced target.
