Auf einer blutgetränkten Matratze wird in grotesk verrenkter Haltung die Leiche einer Prostituierten gefunden. Die Szene erinnert bis ins Detail an eine Mordserie, die zwei Jahre zurückliegt und dem Zeitpunkt aufhörte, als Derek Tyler gefasst wurde. Aber Tyler kann das neue Opfer nicht getötet haben. Er sitzt im Hochsicherheitstrakt einer psychiatrischen Haftanstalt und spricht mit niemandem ein Wort. Doch seine jahrelange Erfahrung als Psychologe sagt Tony Hill, dass es nur Tyler gewesen sein kann. An dieser verblüffenden Theorie haben die Kriminalinspektorin Alex Fielding und ihre Kollegin vom Sittendezernat Jan Shields große Zweifel. Hill vermutet, dass ein Unbekannter durch intensive psychologische Beeinflussung geistig zurückgebliebene, beziehungsweise gestörte Männer auswählt, die dann Tylers grausame Fantasien in die Tat um­setzen. Die Mitarbeiterin des Morddezernats Paula bietet sich als Lockvogel an und begibt sich in die Prostituiertenszene. Ihre Polizei­kollegen können nicht verhindern, dass auch Paula in die Hände des Täters gerät. Für Tony Hill verdichtet sich der Verdacht immer mehr, dass der Täter nur aus Polizeikreisen stammen kann, da offensichtlich alle Schritte der Beamten vom großen Unbekannten beobachtet werden und er so­mit über alle Aktionen die Kontrolle hat. Schließlich gelingt es Dr. Tony Hill mit seinen ungewöhnlichen psychologischen Methoden auf die Spur des großen Unbekannten zu kommen.

Police are baffled when a prostitute's murder matches in every detail a series of killings for which Derek Tyler has already been caught and jailed. Tony knows it can't be a copycat because in sexual homicides every killer has their own unique signature, but if this isn't someone imitating Derek's atrocities then how are the killings happening at all? While Alex and her team struggle for a lead on the streets, Tony thinks Tyler holds the key. But there's a problem: Tyler has remained utterly mute since the day he was arrested and to crack him Tony must to use every ounce of his psychological skill and imagination. Tensions develop with the police operation as vice-squad DI Jan disagrees with Alex's running of the case. And things go disastrously wrong when Paula becomes bait for the killer and is kidnapped without a trace. All the experts have diagnosed Tyler as a schizophrenic who heard imaginary voices telling him to kill. But Tony realises that Tyler's "voice" was a real one. He is the victim of brainwashing - and whoever controlled him is now controlling another killer and has Paula within their power. When it becomes clear that whoever is doing this has access to information about the police investigation, for Tony the spotlight falls on one person... someone with a knack for psychological persuasion, a past containing the key to their motivations, and now uncomfortably close to Alex's police team throughout their search for Paula.

Alex et Tony doivent élucider au plus vite une énigme : une prostituée a été assassinée selon le mode opératoire d’un tueur qui est pourtant sous les verrous, Derek Tyler. Or Tony est formel, ce meurtre ne peut être l’oeuvre d’un plagiaire car dans les cas d’homicide, chaque tueur possède sa propre signature... Il ne fait donc aucun doute que Derek Tyler détient la clé de l’énigme, mais pas moyen de le faire parler : il reste muet depuis le jour de son arrestation. L’enquête, qui met déjà Alex dans une posture difficile, tourne carrément au désastre lorsque Paula, servant d’appât au tueur, disparaît sans laisser de trace...
