20世纪70年代末，苏州棉纺厂家属区一条小巷里住着庄、林两家人。正值高考恢复，身为教师的庄超英和妻子黄玲将儿女高考作为家庭头等大事，邻居林武峰和宋莹一家受其影响也开始关注儿子学业。庄超英、黄玲一家看似和谐体面，儿子庄图南刻苦好学，女儿庄筱婷乖巧懂事，但庄超英的懦弱愚孝让家人备受伤害。隔壁林武峰、宋莹一家看似我行我素，儿子林栋哲异常顽皮，实则夫妻间相互扶持，亲子间相互尊重，家庭热闹而完满。林武峰和宋莹顺应时代变迁，举家到广州寻找新的机遇，从小青梅竹马的庄筱婷与林栋哲分开后发现对彼此的心意，相约考入同一所大学，在毕业时面临家庭与现实的阻碍仍坚定地选择了对方，庄图南和李佳辗转多年后也终成眷属。
