After the Verdugos return to Monterey, Anna Maria enters their home and discovers that her father is missing. Pablo, their former servant, tells her the old man is being held hostage and will be killed unless she hands over 45,000 pesos believed to be in the house. Diego and Bernardo arrive and Pablo slips away, warning Anna Maria that her father will be killed if she tells anyone of the kidnapping.
Although she won't admit it, Diego discovers what has happened, and he asks the local commandante to send a guard to the Verdugo hacienda. This angers Romero, who claims it will endanger Verdugo's life, and he convinces Anna Maria to send Diego away. When he leaves, she finds the money hidden in a secret panel, and she gives it to Sergeant Garcia to deliver to the kidnappers.
Zorro visits her that night and she tells him of her actions, prompting him to rush to Garcia's aid. The sergeant has been ambushed by the thieves, but Zorro tricks them and learns Verdugo is being held in the blacksmith's shop. While Zorro is fighting the blacksmith, Garcia lets Pablo sneak Verdugo past him, putting the merchant in mortal danger.

A lovaglásból hazatérve Anna Mariát óriási felfordulás fogadja a haciendán és nem találja sehol az apját. Pablo megjelenik és elmondja, hogy az apját túszként tartják fogva és az összegyűjtött pénzt követeli a szabadságáért cserébe. Amikor Don Diego és Bernardo megérkezik, Pablo elmenekül, de előtte megfenyegeti Anna Mariát, hogy az apját megölik, ha bárkinek egy szót is szól. Diego rájön, hogy Verdugót elrabolták és levélben kéri a kapitányt, hogy küldjön katonákat a haciendára. Garcia és Reyes meg is érkeznek, Anna Maria pedig ráveszi Diegót, hogy térjen vissza a városba, így ő nyugodtan keresheti a pénzt. A könyvespolc titkos rekeszében meg is találja azt és Garciával a régi misszió romjaihoz viteti. Zorro felkeresi Anna Mariát és megtudja, hogy Garcia hová vitte a váltságdíjat. Zorro odanyargal és miután kihallgatja, hogy a kovácsműhelyben tartják fogva, ártalmatlanná teszi a két banditát. Zorro megpróbálja kiszabadítani, de maga Verdugo beszéli le az erőszakról, így Pablo, papi csuhába bújva, magával viszi. Garcia bárgyú módon felajánlja a két csuhásnak az elfogott banditák lovait, így Pablo továbbra is fogságban tarthatja Verdugót.
Dopo il ritorno dei Verdugo, Anna Maria entra nella propria casa e scopre che il padre non c’è. Pablo, il loro ex servitore, le dice che l’uomo è stato fatto ostaggio e che verrà ucciso nel caso non vengano consegnati i soldi dell’investimento. Diego e Bernardo arrivano e Pablo scappa intimando il silenzio ad Anna Maria. Anche se la ragazza non vuole parlare, Diego capisce quanto accaduto e chiede al comandante locale di mandare delle guardie all’hacienda dei Verdugo. Questo rende furioso Romero che convince Anna Maria a far allontanare Diego. Una volta sola Anna Maria trova la cassa con dentro il denaro custodito dal padre e incarica il Sgt. Garcia di consegnarlo ai rapitori. Mentre il sergente viene sorpreso dai banditi, Zorro interviene, riprende il denaro e tenta di liberare Verdugo, ma i malviventi riescono a fuggire ancora una volta.
