It was a beautiful week - I visited Paris with my mother, and we had a delicious meal at 'Le Dome', which was much loved by Hemingway and all of early 20th century Parisian artistic society. Whilst exploring Le Marais, I got sucked into the seductive world of evocative scents at Cire Trudon, the oldest candle manufacturers in France, who were the official suppliers of candles to the court of Versailles. I brought back a candle to scent the chateau in time for Lalande's open day for the French 'Journee du Patrimoine'. Any excuse! Something magical happened at the chateau this week. We had mass in the chapel! We bought Lalande from the family of the Marquis of Nadaillac, who had been living here for 200 years. They were a deeply religious family, who built the Chapel of Saint Joseph in the garden. Two of the eleven children of the last marquis became priests. One of them, now in his 80s, came back to visit us and gave mass in the chapel. I felt very moved to attend mass given by someone who'd spent his childhood here and whose family built our chapel. Along with our usual fun of cooking and hosting - and seeing the return of Mummy, Percy and Scotman, it was a very special week! Many of you have asked about Nic, as he's the friend that I bought the Chateau de Lalande with 14 years ago, yet he's never seen on Escape to the Chateau DIY! As you'll be on this week's video, he's very shy and doesn't appear on social media ;) The holiday was a whirlwind of waterfalls, tartan, fine dining, stunning scenery, and a rather stubborn black forest gateau... This week at the chateau was so sweet that we were, in the words of Evelyn Waugh, 'drowning in honey'. After a seven month wait, we eventually received the marble for our new apartments! And we received our annual payment - in honey - from the bee keeper who keeps his hives on our land, and created Lalande's first Honey Tasting Platter Then, just as we felt that life couldn't get any sweeter, we received an invitation to a costume party at the Chateau de Bourneau, to celebrate the birthday of its lovely chatelaine, Erin. That trip was like stepping into a fairytale - her chateau is breathtakingly beautiful. But it wasn't just honey tasting and partying, Michael and I also knuckled down to some much needed admin, and we have created a new reservation system for Lalande! So, for those of you who'd like to come and experience chateau life with us here at Lalande - and taste lots of honey! - you can book directly with us here: http://www.chateaudelalande.com/booking/ And to see more of the beautiful Erin and her Chateau de Bourneau on Instagram, I really recommend following her on Instagram. Whilst dramatic events were engulfing Europe and changing the way of life there beyond recognition, Scotman and I were blissfully floating up the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia. Happily cut off from the world, we were enjoying stunning scenery, exquisite food, wonderful people, mysterious waterways and unspoilt nature. Reality only hit when we disembarked from the boat in Cambodia, and learnt that we'd been on the last boat up the Mekong - all future cruises had been cancelled. Our epic race against time to make it home to the chateau before the borders closed, began! The holiday was so epic that I've had to spilt it into two vlogs. This week's is the Vietnamese portion of the trip, and next week I'll show you the wonders of Cambodia! Escape with us, on 'The Last Boat up the Mekong'. I feel incredibly lucky that my brother Gerald and I were able to enjoy that time together before facing our respective lockdowns - he's now in England and I'm back in France with my mother Escape to the chateau with ’The Chateau Diaries’ This weekly vlog follows the adventures of chatelaine Stephanie in her French 16th century home, the Chateau de Lalande, in the heart of rural France A very special thank you to all of you who have become Patrons of the Chateau de Lalande. • S02E18 Episode 18: Sundays at the Chateau - How the Chateau won a TV competition - Bienvenue chez nous!

    • February 2, 2020
    • YouTube

VERY IMPORTANT ADDITION!!! I recorded this video just before the series was shown on French television, and it has since caused a scandal in France. The nation has taken against a pair of our competitors, Audrey and Dimitri, for their criticisms of the other bed and breakfasts, most especially the Chateau de Lalande. Everyone's support has mean a great deal to all of us at Lalande, but I would like to urge people to also be kind to Audrey and Dimitri. We're all entitled to our opinions, especially in matters of taste. Not everyone loves the aesthetic of a traditional, historic home. I think that Audrey and Dimitri would have preferred minimalist, modern, designer surroundings. And whilst we will never see eye to eye on the type of home that we want to create and offer to the world, I don't think they deserve the depth of backlash that they've received. They were always polite during filming, and although they complained about the look of the chateau, I think they were fair in their scoring. Let's remember that it's only a competition, and life would be boring if we all loved the same things ❤️ I'm finally able to reveal all and talk about taking part in the French bed and breakfast competition, 'Bienvenue Chez Nous'! It was an amazing experience which was shown on French tv last week, and WE WON!!! My mother and I took part together, and visited the other contestants throughout France. Welcoming them (and their criticism!) to Lalande in return was incredibly nerve-wracking, but very rewarding. Escape to the chateau with ’The Chateau Diaries’ ???? This Sunday I take you on a tour of the French Galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to see their spectacular period French Chateau Rooms. All dating from the 18th century, they're masterpieces of the art of interior design. Filled with furniture made for Louis XV, Louis VI and Queen Marie Antoinette, they represent the pinnacle of French luxury and beauty. I also uncover the fascinating stories of the patrons who made it possible to save these rooms, which had been ripped out of their crumbling mansions, and to reunite them with the finest furniture of the period. And today I'm making a very exciting announcement - I've launched our Chateau Diaries Patreon Page!!! So there is now an easy way for any of you to become involved in the restoration of a 16th century French chateau. But the overwhelming response that I've received from all of you since starting this vlog has redoubled my energy. This Sunday I indulge my love of porcelain and delve into the world of Spode! I show you pieces from our collection at the Chateau de Lalande and talk about the fascinating history of this quintessentially British brand. I’m so happy that, when I first bought Lalande 15 years ago, I went crazy in the Spode factory shop and bought enough plates to serve 30 people when there were only 4 of us living there I believed that one day the chateau would be filled with people and laughter, and that dream’s come true! (Which, incidentally, means that the chateau is also filled with a lot of broken or cracked plates, but that’s a price I’m happy to pay - and it gives me a great excuse to add to my collection!) A very special thank you to all of you who have become Patrons of the Chateau de Lalande. I only launched our Patreon page 10 days ago and we already have over 100 patrons! I’ve been overwhelmed by your response, and am planning lots of renovations to the chateau that I’ve been longing to do for years! There are extraordinary vegetable gardens, orchards, and an area for the cultivation of medicinal plants - even the walls of the labyrinth are made of edible trees. This Sunday I'm delighted to reveal a local jewel to you - the Church of Saint Martin in the village of Vic. It contains one of the most important set of romanesque frescoes in France, which are nearly 900 years old! They are a masterpiece of 12th century art, and I feel unbelievably lucky to live so near to such artistic treasures. The frescoes and the church urgently require restauration. Both the French government and the local authorities have donated money, but there remains a shortfall of €40,000 to save these treasures. If you would like to donate, please follow this link: https://www.fondation-patrimoine.org/... The website is only in French. On the first page you can ignore the options regarding tax - they're just to give French taxpayers an idea of how much they will be able to deduct from their taxes if they donate. You will be asked to give your name and address - if you do so, your name will go onto a plaque showing all of the donors.

As you can imagine, your help means more now than ever. • May 8, 2020

Join Mummy for a private tour of our organic walled garden! This is the place where we harvest all of the fruit, vegetables and cut flowers for the chateau. When we bought the chateau there was just the beautiful ancient wall and dilapidated greenhouse, and my mother and our volunteers are slowly transforming it back into a jewel of a kitchen garden, that I rely on heavily for wonderful produce to cook for my guests in the summers. • YouTube

Join me for a private tour of the untouched outbuildings in the Chateau de Lalande's Stable Courtyard! This is very much a 'before' tour of buildings that are going to need a lot of love and attention before they blossom into beautiful new areas for the chateau. The only one that we've worked on so far is the bread oven room, where we've already restored our huge 19th century bread oven - it has a diameter of nearly 3 metres, and is regularly used to make delicious meals! Please excuse the mess in the rest of the buildings - they have a long way to go, but I can imagine them transformed into beautiful entertaining spaces and apartments in future! I'm delighted to welcome you into my home, and to take you on a personal tour. There's so much to see that I've had to split the tour into several parts.
