En 1900, un jeune homme, né au sein d'une famille aisée, souffre depuis l'enfance de crises nerveuses et de suffocations. Après un premier chagrin d'amour, il part pour Balbec respirer le grand air de la mer. 20 ans plus tard, après la 1ère Guerre Mondiale, de plus en plus malade, il entreprend de puiser dans son passé toute l'inspiration de son oeuvre littéraire...
