Top Gear (1977)

1978

The original Top Gear (which was aired from 1977 to 2001) started as a monthly television series produced by BBC Midlands, based at Pebble Mill. The 30 minute programmes had a magazine format and were transmitted to viewers in the Midlands region only. Top Gear and its title, was conceived by Executive Producer Derek Smith. The programme covered motoring related issues such as new car road tests, fuel economy, safety, the police, speeding, insurance, second-hand cars and holiday touring.

Top Gear

2002

Tests whether cars, both mundane and extraordinary, live up to their manufacturers' claims. Travels to locations around the world, performing extreme stunts and challenges to see what the featured cars are capable of doing. Celebrity guests appear on some episodes to help test the vehicles. Things don't always go as planned, though, with broken bones and mechanical mishaps sometimes part of the experiments.

Top Gear: Extra Gear

BBC Three and BBC Worldwide have co-commissioned Extra Gear, a new Top Gear show presented by Top Gear host Rory Reid. Filmed at the famous Top Gear studio, each week Extra Gear will bring fans exclusive new footage, interviews, specially-recorded films and behind-the-scenes access to Top Gear. Fans will be able to get closer to the action than ever before with Extra Gear, which will be available to view on BBC Three’s live page and BBC Three on iPlayer straight after Top Gear finishes on BBC Two.
