In 1988 Eddy Planckaert is for the first time in his career as the absolute leader at the start of the Tour of Flanders. In the ADR jersey and therefore without leader Eric Vanderaerden. And with success, because Planckaert wins his first major classic after eight years. Two years later he also writes Paris-Roubaix after his name in an inimitable way.
Planckaert is a late bloomer, unlike his successor Edwig Van Hooydonck. He is only 22 when he conquers the hearts of cycling-loving Flanders in the 1989 Tour of Flanders.
On the highest scaffold, a very happy Van Hooydonck gives way to tears. In the Tour of 1991 he repeats this success, but the tears are gone. The last highlight of a much too short career. Moreover, Van Hooydonck has to deal with an emerging West Flemish who will have no equal in the classic work of the 1990s: Johan Museeuw.
In 1988 staat Eddy Planckaert voor het eerst in zijn loopbaan als absolute kopman aan de start van de Ronde van Vlaanderen. In het truitje van ADR en dus zonder kopman Eric Vanderaerden. En met succes, want Planckaert wint na acht jaar z’n eerste grote klassieker. Twee jaar later schrijft hij op onnavolgbare wijze ook nog Parijs-Roubaix achter zijn naam.
Planckaert is een laatbloeier, in tegenstelling tot zijn opvolger Edwig Van Hooydonck. Die is pas 22 als hij in 1989 de harten van wielerminnend Vlaanderen verovert in de Ronde van Vlaanderen. Op het hoogste schavotje laat een dolgelukkige Van Hooydonck zijn tranen de vrije loop. In de Ronde van 1991 herhaalt hij dit succes, maar de tranen blijven achterwege. Het laatste hoogtepunt uit een veel te korte carrière. Bovendien moet Van Hooydonck afrekenen met een opkomende West-Vlaming die in het klassieke werk van de jaren ‘90 geen gelijke zal kennen: Johan Museeuw.
