Rutger ontmoet Alex, die na jaren van verslaving en dakloosheid opnieuw richting probeert te geven aan zijn leven met zijn tekeningen. Bij kapper Yahia hoort Rutger hoe diens succesvolle bestaan in Nederland samengaat met een kritische blik op nieuwe Syrische vluchtelingen. In Ter Apel spreekt Rutger met Ashe, een Amerikaanse transvluchteling die zich juist in Nederland veilig hoopt te voelen, terwijl het onzeker is of die hier mag blijven.
Rutger meets Alex, who, after years of addiction and homelessness, is trying to give direction to his life again through his drawings. At hairdresser Yahia's, Rutger hears how her successful existence in the Netherlands coexists with a critical view of new Syrian refugees. In Ter Apel, Rutger speaks with Ashe, an American trans refugee who hopes to feel safe specifically in the Netherlands, while it is uncertain whether she will be allowed to stay.
