Kurz nach dem Start, um 20:31 Uhr Ortszeit, explodierte der fast leere zentrale Flügeltank der 747, wobei das Flugzeug in der Mitte auseinander gerissen wurde. Der Bug stürzte direkt nach der Explosion ab, das Heck mit Tragflächen und den noch laufenden Motoren stieg weitere 30 Sekunden in die Höhe und stürzte schließlich auch ins Meer. Alle 230 Insassen kamen bei dem Unglück ums Leben.

There was no mayday call from the crew. Rumours spread that the B-747 was downed by a misguided navy missile, sparking the biggest accident investigation in history.
