Auf dem Frazer-Schiff „Prinz Edward“ sind drei Besatzungsmitglieder an einer geheimnisvollen Krankheit gestorben. Das Schiff wird unter Quarantäne gestellt. Als die Tochter des Kapitäns erkrankt, läßt er sie heimlich an Land schaffen. Daraufhin breitet sich die Seuche über die ganze Stadt aus. Für James Onedin uns seine Schwester Isabel bedeutet diese Katastrophe wenig, im Vergleich zu der Tatsache, daß sie einen Vertrag nicht erfüllen können.
The 'Prince Edward', a Frazer Line ship is put in quarantine by order of strict new medical officer Dr. Darling after its captain,Corcoran,and his daughter fall ill. James is concerned that if he cannot move the ship he will be sued for breach of contact. Lucy dies but ultimately it is shown that she had the plague,caught from fleas on her pet guinea pig,and the Onedins are exonerated. The port is still closed but this is 'force majeure',beyond Onedin's control,so the contract is not broken after all.
Egyre többen betegednek meg a Prince Edward nevű hajón, amely állatbőröket szállít. A hajó a Frazer Társaság tulajdonában van. A betegek közül útközben hárman meghalnak. A kapitány el akarja titkolni a dolgot a kikötői hatóságok elöl, nehogy karanténba zárják hat hétre a hajót és utasait. Liverpool szegénynegyedeiben mind többen betegednek meg egy ismeretlen eredetű járványban. Dr. Darling, egészségügyi biztos felkéri Robert Onedin képviselőt, szólítsa fel a Városi Tanácsot, és minden eszközzel akadályozza meg a járványt.
