The first instalment in the guide will focus on the two-part Pilot that launched one of the biggest television shows of the 2000s. Does it still hold up? Let's find out.
What's with all of the Kate hate? Let's delve into her very first episode of the series and explore how Kate became a somewhat divisive character. Even to the actress playing her. Also, does 'Tabula Rasa' still hold up as an episode? Do the questions raised within it ever get answered? Let's find out.
Join me for a 'Walkabout' with John Locke as I dissect the man's character arc, the themes and debates surrounding him, and unpack THAT famous twist in the tale. It's a classic episode, but do the questions and mysteries raised in 'Walkabout' ever get answered? Let's find out.
This time we are exploring the Jack-centric episode 'White Rabbit' through which we shall examine Jack as a reluctant leader and discuss his effectiveness (or lack of) in the role, plus how his deep-seated daddy issues inform almost every aspect of his character going forward. We will also address several larger mysteries from the series, including the ominous manifestation of his father's "ghost" on the island and what exactly was going on during those appearances. Plus, we shall explore the ongoing connection between LOST and 'Alice in Wonderland'. Do the questions raised in 'White Rabbit' ever get answered? Let's find out.
This time we are exploring the ground-breaking sixth episode 'House of the Rising Sun' in which we shall scratch beneath the surface of Sun's unhappy marriage and see her do the one thing her husband Jin seems incapable of doing: communicating. This episode also features the introduction of the "Adam & Eve" mystery -- one of the longest running mysteries from the show -- so we shall dive deep into The Island's backstory and lore involving Mother, The Man in Black and Jacob. Do the questions raised in 'House of the Rising Sun' ever get answered? Let's find out.
It is time to release 'The Moth'! I am cracking open the cocoon of episode seven, a fan-favourite episode that I happen to have a few issues with. Namely the character of Charlie Pace himself. There is much to discuss including why Charlie has proven himself to be so divisive over the years; how he redeems himself in later episodes; the nature of his sibling rivalry and why that resonates with Jacob and The Man in Black's story; how Catholicism figures into the overall themes of LOST; why Locke is always trying to stop people from leaving The Island and the wider significance of the lesson he teaches Charlie; and the show's portrayal of addiction. Do the questions raised in 'The Moth' ever get answered? Let's find out.
We are unpacking the pros and cons of Sawyer, one of LOST's most popular characters who -- believe it or not -- started out as one of its most hated. From his unlikeable beginnings as the troublemaking redneck to his transformation into a full-blown romantic lead, Josh Holloway's Southern fried charm offensive brings humanity to a role that could have been played as pure villainy. We will explore the nature of confidence scams on the show, from the small-time schemes of bad boy Sawyer to the existential con being run by The Man in Black throughout the series; plus further discussion about The Island's selective healing abilities; the show's interest in redeeming its villains; how the infamous love triangle got off to a solid, sexy start; and how the Star Wars character of Han Solo influenced the way in which Sawyer was written and developed.
This time we are exploring the tortured torturer Sayid Jarrah in his first character-centric episode where he is tied up and interrogated by the French Woman. This episode also sets the foundations for almost the entire mythology going forward: The Others; the cable and underground research stations; the sickness; The Black Rock; the whispers; seeing someone in "the next life"... it all starts here! We'll get into the explanations behind all of those mysteries, plus we shall look ahead to Sayid's trajectory as a character and how his struggle against inner darkness comes to represent a core message within the series.
This time we are charting Claire Littleton's bizarre journey to The Island in which she tangles with a so-called psychic and his increasingly deranged prophecies. Is he for real or is he a fraud? We will answer those questions and more, such as: what did Claire's nightmare mean? What was Ethan injecting into Claire and why did he kidnap her? How does The Island interfere with and manipulate objects? This is a highly underrated episode of the series that sets up some mysteries that don't fully pay off until Season Six. We will also discuss Claire as a character and how she was sometimes underserved by the storylines in the show.
This time it is a race through the jungle to find Claire and Charlie as Jack wrestles with his own guilt and clashes with Locke for the very first time. It's an exciting and eventful episode but I have some issues with it, which I shall get into. We will also answer major mysteries concerning Ethan Rom and his backstory, as well as unpack The Hatch and its history to understand why its discovery is such a landmark moment in the series.
Join me as I unpack 'Whatever the Case May Be', which I consider to be the worst episode of Season One. I'm going to explain why that is, as well as do some follow-up on the whole "Kate Hate" debate that has raged on ever since the 'Tabula Rasa' episode guide first dropped.
We're going on a vision quest with Boone for 'Hearts and Minds', an episode that foreshadows where the show is heading and gives us some real insight into both Boone and Shannon's contentious sibling rivalry, as well as Locke's mysterious motivations and his need to keep the hatch discovery a secret.
What's the deal with Walt? Some of the biggest questions in the early days of LOST all revolved around this character. Why is he special? What are his powers? Why did the show leave so much of his story unresolved? Well, I will answer all of these and explain how the show indirectly addressed them over the course of several seasons. But it all starts here with the episode 'Special', which explores the estranged (and strained) relationship between Michael and Walt. Did the show really do these characters dirty? Let's talk about it.
Did you know that co-creator/showrunner Damon Lindelof considers 'Homecoming' the worst episode they ever did of LOST? We are going to discuss why that is, and whether or not he's right. There are many problems with this Charlie-centric episode, including some underwhelming flashbacks and some anti-climatic on-island action, but are there any redeeming features? We will also answer several mysteries surrounding Ethan Rom, The Others, and untangling the series of events that happened to Claire during her time with them. But most importantly of all, we shall tackle the age old question: is it Scott or Steve?
Sawyer hears voices in the jungle and chases after a wild boar with a vendetta against him, but who or WHAT is he really chasing out there? Is this all the secret handiwork of The Man in Black? There is a strong case to be made. We will go onto explore and explain the nature of the whispers on the island and various animal manifestations, whilst also dissecting the show's preoccupation with themes of "what goes around comes around" karma and the self-destructive power of revenge.
How do you redeem an unsympathetic character and make the audience care? LOST nails it in the hugely underrated '...In Translation'. The raft burns, Jin takes the blame, and tensions with Michael hit boiling point, forcing Sun to finally find (and use) her voice. We shall discuss the nature of these conflicts and how they relate to group dynamics, "othering", and mob justice, as well as dealing with the divisive Sayid/Shannon romance (Shayid as I like to call them), since they make things official in this episode, plus some further analysis of Locke's role as therapist to the Castaways.
What do the numbers in LOST mean? It’s one of the show’s biggest mysteries and it deserves a deep dive. In this video, we’ll break down their many appearances and hidden Easter eggs throughout the series, explore their cultural impact, and look at how they expanded into "The LOST Experience" ARG. We’ll also examine Hurley’s role as both comic relief and audience surrogate, and how his journey with the numbers ultimately shapes his path toward leadership. This is an epic one, with a little surprise halfway through!
The con is on! Locke’s belief in the Island is tested like never before. In this episode guide, we’ll break down the meaning behind his prophetic nightmare and the true purpose of Boone’s “sacrifice,” whilst exploring who or what is pulling the strings on these events: The Island or The Man in Black? We’ll also dig into Locke’s heart-breaking flashbacks with Anthony Cooper and explore how the episode sets up future arcs for Sawyer and Mr. Eko.
Get the tissues ready for the most emotional episode of the season in which life and death hang in the balance on The Island, quite literally. We shall explore all things Jack as the man is pushed to his limits as a doctor in the wild; explore why the first person to go had to be Boone; discuss what birth and pregnancy mean to the overall mythology; and unpack exactly what "letting go" truly means.
Sayid takes the lead in what should have been Shannon's episode and it produces mixed results. We will weigh the good and evil within the tortured Iraqi torturer and how his character wrestles with darkness throughout the series, as well as discuss the "fridging" of Shannon and other female characters (and why it matters). We will also unpack the awesome Sayid versus Locke confrontation at the heart of the episode, which is easily the best bit!
One last stop before the finale. Kate jostles for a place on the raft whilst torn between two men. This is a perfect time to discuss the trouble with love triangles and how Kate became the lynchpin of an increasingly controversial one in LOST. We shall also answer some mysteries such as why Walt was so freaked out about opening the hatch and who sent Kate the letter that got her to come back home. There is much to cover!
Buckle up because we're going for a ride! The 3-part Season One finale 'Exodus' explored in one epic explainer. We shall discuss all of the major storylines and mysteries as the first season ends on an iconic (yet contentious) cliffhanger that flows into the second season. I provide an analysis of the season as a whole and where it sits in terms of the show's legacy. Plus, we shall answer many of the questions raised by it including: Who lit the pillar of smoke? Is "the monster" really a security system? How did The Black Rock end up in the jungle? Why did The Others take Walt? What was with Hurley's accident prone trip to the airport? Was the "Hurley" bird ever actually intended to be a real mystery? And many more.
