Observation of splash should only used as a secondary method of bullet impact determination. The reason is that bullet and target fragments commonly produce displacement of debris resulting in highly deceptive splash signatures in the general vicinity of the target. Also, splash is quickly moved and dispersed by wind making it even more deceptive if the spotter does not see the origin of the signature immediately at the time of impact. Often, splash is entirely invisible to the spotter due to vegetative cover or absorption of the bullet into the impact area. It is for these reasons that observing BULLET TRACE must be the primary means of shot observation for long range precision rifle fire as it will give a clear indication of impact location.
