    • January 17, 2023

Today on The Skid Factory Woody and AL check out a Former Project car that was built in the shed nearly 20 Years ago! Sebby's HX Holden one tonner was previously owned by our mate Scott with the Harrop Supercharged Iron Lion Wagon. Al removed the 350 Chev TH350 and converted the ute with a 4.0L 1UZFE from a Toyota Celsior and then later Turbocharged it using a Garrett GT4088, Haltech Sprint 500 and a bunch of other Bits making it a reliable 400HP Weekend Cruiser. Although this car was built nearly 20 years ago Al still uses similar techniques when he's building cars now. Old habits don't die.

  • S19E04 Torsen LSD Diff Install JZS171 Toyota Crown

    • January 24, 2023

In this episode of The Skid Factory we check out the latest upgrades to the JZS171 Crown Wagon and address one of the biggest problems with the platform. Al sold the car to his mate Brad after the exhaust, intercooler and ecu upgrades and since then Brad has had a bunch more work done at Golebys including a highmount turbo, head studs and gasket. It makes good power but getting it to the ground is now an issue with the factory open centre differential. The Internet told us that a diff from a Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86 will "Bolt in" so we sourced one from the local Subaru wrecking yard. The G series diff from the BRZ / 86 is a Torsen Limited Slip Differential and supposedly will bolt into not only the JZS platform but also the XE10 Chassis and possibly others! The "G series" Crown wheel and pinion can be swapped from vehicles like the MX83 Cressida MA70 supra and some models of the Toyota Hilux to change gear ratios but this isn't a simple swap. If you've done this before let us know in

    • February 21, 2023

Today On The Skid Factory We're checking out Shayne's Peter Brock VL Calais Sport by HDT and talk about the history of the car and the controversy surrounding the Energy Polarizer. The Holden Dealer Team (HDT) was a racing team in Australia that competed in touring car racing during the 1970s and 1980s. In the mid 80s, HDT became embroiled in controversy over a device called the "Energy Polarizer," which was claimed to improve the performance of HDT cars by aligning and “Polarizing” molecules. There was no scientific evidence to support these claims and executives at Holden rejected it as a legitimate performance product. Holden soon after severed ties with HDT. Brocks legacy is a decade of tuned Commodores that are now valuable collector Cars and Shayne’s VL Calais is a prime example.

  • S19E09 Modifying an Aussie Icon! Would Brocky Approve? ???????? HDT VL Calais Sport Ep 2.

    • February 28, 2023

On this episode of The Skid Factory we set about modernising an iconic 1980's HDT VL Calais by adding a modern engine management system. We explain in depth what's required to successfully convert a carburettored engine to modern engine management from fuel system to ignition right down to wiring needs and initial startup. The ancient Quadrajet Carburettor is being replaced by multi-port fuel injection and an electronic throttle body from an LSA. The distributor is also swapped out for a VT Commodore crank angle sensor so the Haltech Elite 2500 ECU can have full control over the engine.

    • March 8, 2023

We return to the dyno and after an NA tune the Nitrous Bottle is cracked open and purged ready for some chemical supercharging. Thanks to Shayne for the opportunity to work on such a Special Australian made vehicle! Shayne is stoked with the outcome and has already put some KM's on the new combo, Stay tuned for some future episodes where we'll get the Brock VL out on the track for some fun!

    • March 16, 2023

On this episode of The Skid Factory we tackle the daunting task of splitting, cleaning and rewelding a torque converter. As with many things related to Automatic Transmissions, the converter and it's construction are considered somewhat voodoo and not to be touched. We dive in the deep end in an attempt to both educate ourselves and demystify the process but find out along the way that it is a very time consuming and finicky job and, whilst doable with our skills and equipment, is still probably more practical to have a pro do it, or just buy a bolt together. Thanks to our mate Dave for his legendary skills and advice, Be like Dave, Help out your mates.

We've got Nathan's 1978 SWB 40 Series LandCruiser on the dyno at Knight Family Motorsport to tune the newly Wired Haltech Elite 2500 and decide how much power We think is suitable for a Turbocharged Stock Unopened engine. We had already had a false start the week before due to some transfer case issues but with that all sorted we are ready to go. The tuning process on a stock bottom end engine with known strength issues is a little different to a built engine and Kye from KFM talks us through how to get the most power without risking rod breakage.

Want to know what's inside a Nissan TD42? Why they overheat or how to remove TD42 Injectors? Today on The Skid Factory we make a start on rebuilding the Legendary Nissan TD42 6 cylinder diesel engine. The TD42 was produced from 1988 til 2006 and available in NA and Turbo formats. They were fitted to Nissan's Patrol, Civilian Bus and large forklifts. The most common engine in Australia is the early naturally aspirated "Silvertop" engine which are now commonly fitted to later model patrols that suffer failures of the smaller diesels that are factory fitted. We sourced a high mileage Silvertop with plans to rebuild the engine to turbo specification and fit it to a 2003 Patrol. • August 23, 2023

With the Barra and TH400 mounted in Woody's Crown Wagon it's time to turn our attention to the all important support systems of fuel and electronics. The fuel system is handled by the Raceworks catalogue starting with a surge tank that fits in the available space at the rear of the car. Some custom mounting and modification to the existing fuel tank outlet allows Raceworks 200 series PTFE AN lines and fittings to be used throughout. Up front the Barra is being fed fuel via a Raceworks fuel rail and 1500cc injectors and the pressure is regulated by a GFB FXD AN8 fuel pressure reg. Al then gets stuck into one of his favourite tasks, wiring the ecu. In this case he is wiring both a VCU and PDM in the form of the Haltech Nexus R3 VCU and a Haltech PD16 PDM. This new generation of Haltech products allows much greater flexibility in powering high demand pumps and motors and also control over the engine itself all from the same software interface. Woody also tackles some creature comforts
